DIY Gifts for Pets

Have you finished your holiday shopping yet? It’s always a great feeling to know that you’ve found the perfect gift for a loved one. Of course, pets are important parts of the family, too! Fluffy and Fido both deserve a little special something. You don’t have to break the bank getting things for your furry friend, however. There are some great gifts you can make your dog or cat. Here, an Indianapolis, IN vet lists some terrific DIY gift ideas for pets.

Beds

A new bed can make a great gift for your furry buddy. To upcycle an old sweater into a bed for a cat or small dog, just fill the sleeves and torso with pet-safe stuffing, and then sew the sleeves, neck, and bottom closed. You’ll want arrange it so that it forms an O shape. You can also turn a hard-shell suitcase, wooden crate, or wicker basket into a cute pet bed just by adding blankets or folded pillows. For bigger pooches, look online for great options for doggy beds you can make out of pallets or even old wine barrels.

Toys

You can make Fluffy an adorable toy by stuffing catnip into a baby sock and sewing it closed. If you enjoy sewing, use a pattern to create a cute mouse toy.

Fido

Our canine companions are very playful! Cut an old tee shirt into strips, and braid the pieces together into a rope toy. Or, try putting kibble into an old milk jug or water bottle to make a puzzle toy. Just make sure your four-legged pal doesn’t try to eat the plastic.

Kitty Towers

To turn an old stepladder into a kitty tower for Fluffy, start by adding planks to the steps to widen them out. Then, cover the whole thing in carpet scraps or sisal rope. You can also do this with a bookshelf or metal storage rack.

Pet Tents

You can make a cute pet tent out of a tee shirt and a wire hangar. This is a great option for cats and small dogs!

Tips

Whether buying your pet’s gifts or making them, always put your furry pal’s safety first. Never offer your dog or cat anything with sharp edges, small parts, or loose threads. Ask your vet for more information.
