Safety Tips for Walking Fido After Dark

If you have a canine companion, daily walks are likely a big part of your life. Even if Fido has a yard to patrol and chase squirrels around in, he’ll still benefit from the exercise and stimulation of regular walks. When it comes to our animal companions, safety should always be first and foremost. Read on as a local Indianapolis, IN vet discusses safety tips for those after-dark doggy walks.

Reflective Gear

At night, it’s much easier for you to see approaching cars than for drivers to see you. We recommend getting some reflective gear, both for you and your furry pal. You can pick up a special ‘night leash’ for Fido if you like, or just wrap LED lights around his regular leash. It also isn’t a bad idea to have a jacket and/or sneakers with reflective material or stripes.

Wild Animals

Many animals that are quiet during the day are out and about after dark, and not all of them are safe or friendly. Fido’s hearing and smell are very keen, so your pooch may very well notice an animal before you do. If your furry buddy hears or smells something he can’t see, he could get quite agitated, so stay alert. Along with your phone, bring a flashlight and whistle with you. This can help you see and scare off any strange animals that cross your path. Also, be sure to keep up with Fido’s parasite control and vaccines.

Stick to familiar, well-lit roads after dark. Nighttime is not the best time for you and Fido to go exploring! When walking on a road, keep your pup to the outside, so that you are between him and passing cars. Dogs have a much smaller profile than people do, and may be hard for drivers to see, especially around curves.

Make sure Fido knows important commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. This can keep your pet from approaching dangerous animals or objects.

At night, the temperature can drop quite a bit. If your pup has thin fur, put a jacket on him when you take him out after dark in cold weather. When it’s cold, keep Fido’s walks short and sweet.
