How to Make 2016 Fido’s Best Year Ever

As you start out this brand new year, your canine pal will be right beside you, offering love, friendship, and lots of doggy kisses. This is a great time to revisit your pup’s care regimen, and see if anything needs improving. You can even decide to make pampering Fido one of your resolutions! In this article, an Indianapolis, IN vet offers some great ideas on how to keep that furry tail wagging in 2016.

Fun Toys

Make sure your pooch has plenty of playthings to keep him occupied –and out of trouble–while you’re at work. Fido’s toy box can include rope toys, balls, puzzle toys, and DIY toys, as well as some hi-tech toys, such as automated laser pointers or mechanical ball throwers. Not every toy is safe or suitable for all dogs, so check with your vet for recommendations.

Dogs love exploring new places. Indulge Fido’s adventurous streak by taking him to a doggy park, or bringing him along on a fun camping trip. Ask your vet for advice.

Take time to play with your canine buddy every day. You may find that it’s just as much fun for you as it is for Fido!

Proper Veterinary Care

Bring your canine buddy to the vet at least once this year. In addition to his regular exams, Fido will need wellness care and parasite control. If your pooch hasn’t been fixed or microchipped yet, we also recommend getting these things done right away.

Make sure your pooch is comfy by providing him with a good bed. If Fido is an older dog, consider getting him an orthopedic bed.

Life-Stage Care

Your dog’s care needs will change as he grows older. If you have a puppy, you’ll want to focus on training, socialization, and petiquette this year. Is Fido an adult? Make sure he’s getting proper activity and stimulation, and have some fun with him. Once your pooch enters his senior years, you’ll want to focus more on keeping him comfortable. Check with your vet at each appointment to see if you need to adjust anything with your canine buddy’s care routine.

Be sure to spend plenty of quality time with your canine best bud. Don’t skimp on the belly rubs!
