Five Ways to Keep Kitty’s Mouth Healthy

A large portion of domestic pets today have oral health issues. Don’t let your cat fall into that category! Use these five steps from your Indianapolis’ Southside veterinarian to keep your kitty’s mouth healthy.

The Breath Check

Set aside time every few weeks to check your cat’s breath. This may be easier said than done, but wait until your cat is calm or sleepy, then try to pry open her mouth. If the breath smells especially offensive or rotten, an oral health issue could be to blame. Remember to watch your cat’s body language as well—excessive pawing or scratching at the mouth could indicate pain or discomfort.

Weekly Brushing

Brushing your cat’s teeth yourself will remove excess plaque and tartar build-up, keeping your kitty’s teeth and gums healthy. Purchase a cat-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. Introduce these items slowly at first; again, you may want to wait until your cat is mellowed out. Once she’s used to the brush, put a small dab of paste on it and start brushing one tooth at a time, ending with a downward stroke to remove as much tartar as possible.

Quality Cat Diet

Don’t forget about the diet, which is a key method for keeping dental health in check. Feed your cat a high-quality feline diet throughout her life. Some cat foods are even formulated to promote oral health! Ask your veterinarian to recommend a brand and type that will suit your pet.

Good Chew Toys

Solid chew toys keep teeth and gums strong, give your cat an outlet for her natural chewing needs, and help scrape off excess tartar from the teeth. Pick chew toys without small, breakable pieces, and let your cat go wild!

Regular Vet Visits

Of course, regular visits to your Indianapolis’ Southside vet’s office are another great way to keep your cat’s oral health—and overall well-being—in tip-top shape. Ask your vet how often your cat should be coming in, and visit our Dentistry page for more information.
